  4. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way.
  5. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.”

Luke 19 cont’d

  1. So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully.
  2. And when they saw it, they all grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.”

Philippians 3:4–7

  1. though mine too are significant. If someone thinks he has good reasons to put confidence in human credentials, I have more:
  2. I was circumcised on the eighth day, from the people of Israel and the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews. I lived according to the law as a Pharisee.
  3. In my zeal for God I persecuted the church. According to the righteousness stipulated in the law I was blameless.

People of Athens

  • Acts 1
    1. So Paul stood before the Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I see that you are very religious in all respects.
    2. For as I went around and observed closely your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: ‘To an unknown god.’ Therefore what you worship without knowing it, this I proclaim to you.
    3. The God who made the world and everything in it, who is Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by human hands,
    4. nor is he served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives life and breath and everything to everyone.
    5. From one man he made every nation of the human race to inhabit the entire earth, determining their set times and the fixed limits of the places where they would live,
    6. so that they would search for God and perhaps grope around for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.
    7. For in him we live and move about and exist, as even some of your own poets have said, ‘For we too are his offspring.’
    8. So since we are God’s offspring, we should not think the deity is like gold or silver or stone, an image made by human skill and imagination.
    9. Therefore, although God has overlooked such times of ignorance, he now commands all people everywhere to repent,
    10. because he has set a day on which he is going to judge the world in righteousness, by a man whom he designated, having provided proof to everyone by raising him from the dead.”
    11. Now when they heard about the resurrection from the dead, some began to scoff, but others said, “We will hear you again about this.”
  • What was God asking them to do?
    • Blockers: self-reliance, trust in their own solution
  • What did trusting God look like?
    • Repentance: turn from worshipping idols
    • Trust: follow Jesus’s teachings
  • How might this relate to us today?

What about your story?

  • What is God asking you to do?
  • What is blocking you?
  • What do you need to turn from?
  • What would your life look like if you were trusting and following Jesus?
  • Christians have to keep doing this (Abraham offering up Isaac)
  • What did Ab think was going to happen? —he actually thought Isaac would be raised from the dead
    • Paul parallels this with our faith in the resurrection
  • Trust means dying, believing that God will raise you up again
    • In all these stories something is being laid down.
    • E.g. what Jesus said to the R.Y.R. about the reward (in this age also)
  • Pray that God will reveal to you what he wants you to lay down in trust.
