1 Four kinds of truth

1. Knowledge of Facts
   
   • transferred by teaching, or reading
2. Skill and ability in using gifts
   
   • developed by equipping and training
3. Attitudes
   
   • are caught rather than taught, by modelling and community
4. Worldview/belief system
   
   • can only be learned from stories—our own experiences or other people’s

2. Jesus came to reveal all four of these kinds of truth

• Jesus came as the truth
  
  • John 1:1-2; 14-17 Jesus is described as “the Word”
  • John 18:37 His purpose in coming
  • John 14:17; 15:26; 16:13 —the Spirit of Truth

3. How can we grow in the truth?

1. Knowledge of Facts
   
   • transferred by teaching, or reading
   • Newlife:
     
     • preaching, homegroups, special series like Freedom in Christ & Christianity Explored
     • This coming year we are planning several new teaching series apart from Sunday, offered evenings or Saturdays
     • We need to grasp the truth by the power of the Spirit
       
       • often that is our focus when we are praying for people
       • part of what we do in homegroups
     • We want to provide training and encouragement for you to read the Bible yourself
       
       • and put the truth into practice
2. Skill and ability in using gifts
   
   • developed by equipping and training
   • Newlife:
     
     • We are going to be giving attention to developing spiritual gifts
     • Next Sunday a new series on the Gifts of the Spirit
     • Plus practical development of gifts:
       
       • evangelism: Street evangelism training
       • prophecy: developing the gift
       • healing: focusing some time on developing this gift
       • teaching: training people to use a teaching gift
       • many other gifts:
3. Attitudes
   
   • are caught rather than taught, by modelling and community
   • Newlife:
     
     • We need to spend time together
       
       • special events, like the one in Feb
     • At least one retreat this year
4. Worldview/belief system
   
   • can only be learned from stories—our own experiences or other people’s
   • Newlife:
     
     • Testimonies each Sunday (Kerry very soon)
     • Informal sharing
     • Very good to read Christian biographies
     • Want to have some videos of what God has done and is doing
     • Reading the stories in the Bible
