The therapeutic notion of self-love, popular in today’s culture, says it’s important to love ourselves. But Christians are divided on this idea, with some embracing the notion that God’s love for us and self-love can coexist together, and others rejecting this notion. What does the Bible teach us about how we should view ourselves?

Four themes are identified across the biblical narrative:

  1. God’s love creates us
  2. Our sin separates us
  3. Jesus Christ saves us
  4. God’s work involves us.

Through this, we learn that God loves us so much and wants us to receive that love through Jesus Christ’s salvation. Will we accept that love and allow us to view ourselves as God does?

If so, we will find ourselves simultaneously accepted as we are and encouraged toward moving forward in the directions God leads us in.
