Romans 5:5 (NASB)

  1. …but we even boast of our afflictions, knowing that affliction produces endurance,
  2. and endurance, proven character, and proven character, hope,
  3. and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Three Questions

  1. Why is it that hope does not disappoint?
  2. What is it about God’s love poured out in our heart that fights against disappointment?
  3. What is it that we can put our hope in?

Our Hope

Instead of putting our hope in ideal circumstances we need to shift our hope to Jesus who is the anchor of our soul and who will never disappoint.

  • “This we have as an anchor of the soul, sure and firm, which reaches into the interior behind the veil” Heb 6:19
  • “For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it” Rom 8:24

Conclusions

  • The Holy Spirit helps us overcome disappointment supernaturally through His power.
  • He points us to Jesus, gives us The Word as comfort and encouragement for our soul and reminds us of the promises that are yet to be realized.
