1. Satan is the thief

Trying to mislead and to stop us from doing God’s will

• “I tell you the truth, anyone who sneaks over the wall of a sheepfold, rather than going through the gate, must surely be a thief and a robber!” [John 10:1 NLT]
• “The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy.” [John 10:10 NLT]
• For we wanted to come to you—certainly I, Paul, wanted to again and again—but Satan blocked our way. [1 Thess 2:18 NRSV]

2. Satan perfoms his work through people

• He answered, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, and the good seed are the children of the kingdom. The weeds are the children of the evil one, and the enemy who sowed them is the devil.” [Mat 13:37–39 NRSV]
• “Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves. You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit.” [Matt 7:15–17 NLT]
• But I am not surprised! Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no wonder that his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. [2 Cor 11:14–15 NLT]

3. We are able to identify by testing

• Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. [1 John 4:1–3 ESV]
• The children of God and the children of the devil are revealed in this way: all who do not do what is right are not from God, nor those who do not love their brothers and sisters. [1 John 3:10 NRSV]

4. To guard ourselves

• In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. [Eph 6:16 NLT]
• For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith. And who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God. [1 John 5:4–5 NLT]
