1. How Israelites were deceived by a lie:
Israelites took their focus off God - 1 Samuel 8:5a
They lost sight of their calling - 1 Samuel 8:5b
They were deceived by a lie - 1 Samuel 8:20
2. Confirming to the standards of the world
We are constantly under pressure by the world to conform to its standards.
But what is the world seeking?
Love and acceptance
Peace, rest
Joy, happiness
Long life
Security
Wisdom

3. How do we protect ourselves?
How do we protect ourselves from being deceived by lies?
Psalm 119: 9-11
Seek the Lord with all your heart – Psalm 119:10
Hide his word in your heart – Psalm 119:11
By living according to His word – Psalm 119:9

Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life.
For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one man’s obedience many will be made righteous.
Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more,

Things we say:
I have been sinning a lot, I am not sure if I am a Christian anymore.
I haven’t been praying or reading the Bible, I don’t think I can ask God to help me in this.
I was so bad this week I am not sure if I can go to church.
God only gives you so many chances. You better clean up your act soon if you don’t want to lose your salvation.
Things we say:
I have no right to be blessed because I haven’t been tithing.
I can’t talk about the gospel when I have been such a bad Christian.
I just did something really bad, I don’t feel like I can pray now and invite God’s presence.
You are not a true Christian if you don’t do…
I’ve been doing this, this and this, so I think I am pretty alright with God right now.
Galatians 1
But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed.
Galatians 2
But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is Christ therefore a minister of sin? Certainly not!
For if I build again those things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.
For I through the law died to the law that I might live to God.
I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain.”
Summary
Don’t make Christ’s death in vain.
We live by faith IN THE SON OF GOD.
Do not set aside the grace of God every moment of our life

We do what we can— God does what we cannot
Don’t count your sheep whilst you should be asleep
God’s plan for you (to rest) means that you can’t do everything
Doing more than God expects brings sleepless nights and anxious toil
