Matthew 23 NIV

  1. “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean.
  2. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.

Matthew 22 ESV

  1. “But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment.
  2. And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And the man was speechless.
  3. Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Avoiding this mistake

How do we avoid this mistake and put on the wedding garment?

  1. Acknowledge your nakedness
  2. Run to God alone for clothing

John 19:23–24

23When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; and also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom,
24so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but instead cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.”

Hebrews 2 ESV

  1. Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.
  2. For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution,
  3. how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?

John 19 ESV

  1. …he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”
  2. Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.

Quick Summary

  • Being clothed in Christ
  • The need for it
  • Our nakedness
  • The options we have
    1. Come to God on our own terms
    2. Put on the free gift of Jesus Christ and wear him
  • Choose the second one, daily!
  • It is not what I have done, but what he has done, cancelling out my shame
