in his kindness

boldness, access in confidence

lose heart… afflictions

For this cause, I bend my knee to the Father
15
from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named
16

to dwell Christ, throught faith, in your hearts
in love rooted and built (foundationed)
18

what is the breadth and length and height and depth

Ephesians 4:1–16

A. Walk worthy of the calling: to be perfect in love

1
I therefore encourage you, I, the prisoner of the Lord
to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called
2
with all lowliness and gentleness
with longsuffering, bearing one another in love

B. Which can only happen through unity of the body

3
striving to preserve the one-ness of the Spirit
in the bond of peace
4
one body
and one Spirit
even as you were called in one hope of your calling
5
one (masc) Lord
one (fem) faith
one (neut) baptism
6
one God and father of all
who is over all, and through all, and in all (things)

C. Which comes about by the measure of gift received by each individual

7
But to each of us was given grace
according to the measure of the gift of Christ

D. From Christ who came down and died and rose as the New Creation

8
Therefore it says, having ascended on high he led captives captive, he gave gifts to people
9
τὸ δὲ Ἀνέβη τί ἐστιν εἰ μὴ ὅτι καὶ κατέβη εἰς τὰ κατώτερα [μέρη] τῆς γῆς;
now he ascended, what is it if not that he descended down into the earth.

D′. From Christ who came down and died and rose as the New Creation

10
He, the one who descended
is also the one who ascended far above all the heavens
that he might fill all things

C′. The Gift that creates unity

11
And he gave
apostles
prophets
evangelists
pastors
and teachers
12
for the equipping of the holy ones
for the work of serving
for the building up of the body of Christ

B′. unity of the body

13
until we all arrive
at the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God
at the complete/mature/perfected human
at the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ

A′. Our destiny: to be perfect in love

14
that we might no longer be infants
wave-tossed and blown about by every wind of doctrine
by the trickery of people
who craftily carry out their deceitful schemes
15
but rather practising the truth in love
we may grow up into him in all things
who is the head, Christ
16
from whom the whole body
fitted (or joined) together (of a body or building)
by what every ligament supplies
according to the working by measure of each individual part
bringing about the growth of the body
for the building up of itself in love

Ephesians 4:17–32

Darkened understanding or learning Christ

17
This then I say, and bear witness in the Lord
that no-longer you should walk in the way the Gentiles walk
in the futility of their minds
18
darkened in their understanding
alienated from the life of God
because of the ignorance that is in them
because of the hardness of their heart
19
who have become callous
giving themselves over to indecency
for the practice of every kind of impurity in greediness
20
but you have not so learned Christ
21
in as much as you heard
and in him you were taught
even as the truth is in Jesus

Old and New Creation

22
to put off according to your previous way of life, the old man
which is being corrupted according to deceitful desires
23
to be renewed in the spirit of your minds
24
and to put on the new man
created according to God in righteousness and true holiness.

Walking in Love

25
Therefore having put off falsehood
let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbour,
for we are members one of another.
26
Be angry and do not sin;
do not let the sun go down on your anger
27
Do not give an opportunity to the devil.
28
Let the stealer steal no longer;
rather let him labour, doing honest work with his own hands
that he may have something to share with anyone in need
29
Let no corrupting talk leave your mouths,
but only what is good for building up the person who needs it,
that it may give grace to those who hear.
30
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God,
in whom you were sealed
for the day of redemption.
31
Let all bitterness and rage and anger and shouting and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.
32
Become kind to one another, tenderhearted, showing grace to one another,
just as God in Christ showed grace to you
1
Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.
2
And walk in love, just as Christ loved us
and gave himself up for us, an offering and sacrifice to God for a fragrant aroma.

Ephesians 5:1–14

1
Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.
2
And walk in love, just as Christ loved us
and gave himself up for us, an offering and sacrifice to God for a fragrant aroma.
3
But sexual immorality and all impurity or greed
must not even be named among you, as is fitting for holy ones.
4
Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor sarcastic ridicule-giving, which are out of place,
but instead let there be thanksgiving.
5
For you may be sure of this, that
everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is greedy (that is, an idolater),
has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.
6
Let no one deceive you with empty words,
for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.
7
Therefore do not become fellow sharers with them;
8
for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.
Walk as children of light
9
for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true,
10
and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord.
11
Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.
12
For the things done in secret by them are shameful even to mention.
13
But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible,
14
for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says,
“Awake, O sleeper,
and arise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”

Ephesians 5:15–6:9

15
Watch carefully then how you walk,
not as unwise
but as wise,
16
making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.
17
Therefore do not become foolish,
but understand what the will of the Lord is.
18
and do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery,
but be filled by the Spirit,
19
speaking to one another
in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs
singing and making music with your heart to the Lord,
20
giving thanks,
always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ
to God the Father
21
submitting to one another out of allegiance to Christ.
22
Wives … to your own husbands, as to the Lord.
23
For the husband is the head of the wife
even as Christ is the head of the church,
he is saviour of the body
24
But as the church submits to Christ,
so also should wives … to their husbands in everything.
25
Husbands, love your wives,
as Christ loved the church
and gave himself up for her,
26
that he might make her holy, cleansing her by the washing of water in the word,
27
that he might present to himself the church, in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing,
that she might be holy and without blemish.
28
In the same way husbands should love their own wives as their own bodies.
He who loves his own wife loves himself.
29
For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it,
just as Christ does the church,
30
because we are members of his body.
31
“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother
and hold fast to his wife,
and the two shall become one flesh.”
32
This mystery is profound,
and I speak with reference to Christ and the church.
33
However you, each one of you should so love his own wife as himself,
and the wife should respect her husband.
6:1
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
2
“Honour your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise),
3
“that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”
4
Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger,
but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
5
Slaves, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling,
with a sincere heart, as you would Christ,
6
not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers,
but as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart,
7
rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man,
8
knowing that whatever good anyone does,
this he will receive back from the Lord, whether he is a slave or free.
9
Masters, do the same to them, and stop your threatening,
knowing that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven,
and that there is no partiality with him.

Ephesians 6:10–20

10
Finally, be empowered in the Lord and in his mighty strength.
11
Put on the full armor of God
that you may have the power to stand against the schemes of the devil.
12
For our struggle is not against blood and flesh
but against the rulers
against the authorities
against the powers over this dark world
against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
13
Therefore take up the full armor of God
that you may have the power to withstand on the evil day
and having done everything, to stand.
14
Stand therefore
fastening on the belt of truth
and putting on the breastplate of righteousness
15
and putting shoes on your feet: the readiness given by the gospel of peace.
16
In all of this taking up the shield of faith
with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one
and receive
17
the helmet of salvation
and the sword of the Spirit, which is the spoken word of God
18
praying with every prayer and petition
at all times in the Spirit.
And for this purpose keep alert with all perseverance
and requests for all the saints
19
And also on behalf of me: that words may be given to me
in opening my mouth
in boldness to make known the mystery of the gospel
20
on behalf of which I am an ambassador in chains: that I might be bold, as I should speak.

Ephesians 6:21–24

21
So that you also may know how I am and what I am doing, Tychicus the beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord will tell you everything.
22
I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are, and that he may encourage your hearts.
23
Peace be to the brothers, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
24
Grace be with all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with love incorruptible.
