The Problem:

  • We all have the Spirit if we are Christ’s
  • He is supposed to be a new power within us,
  • so why do we so often fail?

All true Christians have the Spirit

  • Romans 8 (Not the same as being “filled”)
  1. You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
  2. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
  3. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.

Power is available to us

  • Ephesians starts with power: Eph 1
  1. and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might
  2. that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places,
  3. far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.
  • And ends with it: Eph 6
  1. Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.

This power is working in us: Eph 3

  1. For this reason I bow my knees before the Father,
  2. from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,
  3. that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being,
  4. so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith...
  5. Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us,
  • Do you always feel a new power at work in you?

Surrender

  1. Ask God what you should do right now
for “The wisdom that is from above” Jas 3:17
    • You probably know already
  2. Chose to Surrender to him and do it!
    • My will becomes your will
    • (This is actually faith)

God’s power in us

  • When we became a Christian, something new was born in us, created anew, e.g. Eph 2
  1. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
  2. not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
  3. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
  • and Eph 4
  1. [you were taught in Jesus] to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God...

Some curious verses (all from Paul)

  • For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me. [Col 1:29]
  • But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. [1 Cor 15:10]
  • I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. [Gal 2:20]
  • But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. [1 Tim 1:16]

Romans 6

  1. Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?
  2. But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed,
  3. and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.
  4. I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to devotion.

Walking in the Spirit

  1. Ask for wisdom from above
    • The Spirit uses the truth already avalible to you
  2. Surrender
    • needs faith!
    • very often looks like love – Gal 5:22–25
  3. Maturity is not “sinning less” but surrendering more
    • growing in faith=growing “down” in dependence
  4. Peace that comes from surrender
