A. Moab will be destroyed very suddenly 15:1 Click to expand

  1. An oracle concerning Moab:
    Indeed, in a night it is devastated,
      Ar of Moab is destroyed!
    Indeed, in a night it is devastated,
      Kir of Moab is destroyed!

  B. The Moabites Lament 2–4 Click to expand

  1. They went up to the temple,
      the people of Dibon went up to the high places to weep.
    Because of Nebo and Medeba, Moab wails.
      Every head is shaved
        and every beard cut off.
  2. In the streets they wear sackcloth;
      on their roofs and in town squares they all wail
    all of them wail,
      they fall down weeping.
  3. The people of Heshbon and Elealeh cry out,
      their voices are heard as far away as Jahaz.
    For this reason Moab’s soldiers shout in distress;
      their courage wavers.

    C. Grief for Moab 5–9 Click to expand

  1. My heart cries out for Moab;
      her fugitives flee to Zoar, to Eglath-shelishiyah.
    For at the ascent of Luhith they go up weeping;
      on the road to Horonaim they lament their destruction;
  2. The waters of Nimrim are gone
      and the grass is dried up;
    the vegetation desolate
      and nothing green is left.
  3. And so what they have made and stored up,
      they carry over the Brook of the Willows.
  4. Their cry echoes along the border of Moab;
      their wailing reaches to Eglaim and to Beer Elim.
  5. The waters of Dimon are full of blood!
      But, I will bring still more upon Dimon.
    A lion upon the fugitives of Moab
      and the people left in the land.

      D. Israel must be a Safe Refuge for Fugitives 16:1–5 Click to expand

  1. Send rams as tribute to the ruler of the land,
      from Sela in the desert to Mount Zion.
  2. Like fluttering birds
      driven from the nest,
    so are the women of Moab
      at the fords of the Arnon.
  3. Bring a plan, make a decision!
      Provide some shade in the middle of the day!
    Hide the fugitives!
      Do not betray the refugees!
  4. Let the Moabite fugitives live among you.
      Shelter them from the destroyer!
    The oppression will come to an end,
      the destroyer will disappear from your land.
  5. Then a kingdom of love will be set up;
      in faithfulness it will be rule,
    One from David’s family, judging in justice
      and quickly bringing righteousness. .

    B’ The Moabites Lament 6–8 Click to expand

  1. We have heard of Moab’s pride,
      so proud!,
    their boasting, pride, and excess.
      But their boasts are empty!
  2. Therefore the Moabites wail,
      they wail together for Moab!
    Completely devastated, they moan
      they weep and grieve for the raisins of Kir-Hareseth.
  3. For the fields of Heshbon are dried up,
      and the vines of Sibmah.
    The rulers of the nations trampled the choicest vines,
      which once reached Jazer and spread to the desert.
      Their shoots spread out to the sea.
  4. Now I weep with Jazer over the vines of Sibmah.
      I will drench you with my tears, Heshbon and Elealeh,
      No more celebrations over your summer fruit and harvests!

  C’ Grief for Moab 9–12 Click to expand

  1. Joy and happiness disappear from the orchards,
      and in the vineyards no one rejoices or shouts;
    no one treads out wine at the presses
      for I have put an end to the shouting
  2. My heart laments for Moab, like the strumming of a harp,
      my innermost being for Kir Hareseth.
  3. When the Moabites plead at their high places
      till they are worn out,
    and go to their shrines to pray,
      it will be to no avail!

A’ Moab will be destroyed very suddenly 13–14 Click to expand

  1. The LORD has already spoken all of this about Moab.
  2. But now the LORD says:
      “Within three years, like a servant’s contract,
    Moab’s splendor and all her many people will be despised,
      and her survivors will be few and feeble.”
