This passage
will change your attitude towards problems in your life
so that instead of discouraging you
the problems will motivate you
to run and win.
Two Principles
Don’t wear unnecessary stuff
Get rid of it
Don’t loose sight of your goal
Keep your eyes on what you want to be
Hebrews 12
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, we must get rid of every weight and the sin that clings so closely,
and run with endurance the race set out for us,
keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.
Hebrews 12 cont’d
…For the joy set out for him he endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.
Think of him who endured such opposition against himself by sinners, so that you may not grow weary in your souls and give up.
You have not yet resisted to the point of bloodshed in your struggle against sin.
Hebrews 12:5–11 (KJV)
And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:
For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.
Hebrews 12:5–11 (KJV)
Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?
For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.
Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.
Proverbs 3
My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline
or be weary of his reproof
for the LORD reproves him whom he loves
as a father the son in whom he delights.
Hebrews 12:5–11
Compare with Hebrews 5:7–9
During his earthly life Christ offered both requests and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death and he was heard because of his devotion.
Although he was a son, he learned obedience through the things he suffered.
And by being made complete in this way, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him,
Compare Heb 5 & 12
Although he was a son, he learned obedience through the things he suffered.
And by being made complete (perfected) in this way, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him,
and run with endurance the race set out for us,
keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.
Heb 12:12–13
Therefore, strengthen your listless hands and your weak knees,
and make straight running tracks for your feet,
so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but be healed.
Three points
Don’t wear unnecessary stuff
Get rid of it
Don’t keep your eyes on failure
Keep your eyes on the winner
Embrace the problems—they are stretching you and perfecting you, even as with Jesus
