Motivation?
What is the motivation for becoming a Christian?
Two common answers:
You will go to hell if your sins are not forgiven
You are missing out on lots of good things if you don’t
Is that true?
What reasons did Jesus and the Apostles give?
As we are putting together evangelistic material for Newlife Church, I look at a lot of literature.
It usually comes down to one of these two things
Some of the motivations:
Jesus: I will give you life, living water,
Jesus & others: There will be a day of judgement
Jesus & others: be loved and cared for by God
Jesus, Peter, Paul: Repent for you are in danger, God commands you to repent
Paul: You are aliens, objects of anger, but can become one of the beloved people
But there is another dimension
Simply the truth
Jesus is altogether lovely!
so he says, “follow me:
supernatural power draws and authenticates
there is a spiritual reality
Christ is the one that history has been waiting for. He is your destiny
eyes are opened to see spiritual reality and needs
(literal and symbolic eyes)
When Paul was saved, his literal eyes were opened, but this was a picture of what he would do spiritually with the Gospel
Acts 26:16-18
But rise and stand upon your feet, for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you as a servant and witness to the things…,
delivering you from your people and from the Gentiles—to whom I am sending you
to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’
