Andrew Fountain —
What time of year?
Could actually have been on Dec 25th
But early church didn’t celebrate Christmas, so no early tradition
Their main celebration was the resurrection ever first day of the week (Sunday)
What date?
We expect it to be 0 A.D. but it was not
Herod died 4 B.C. and Jesus was probably between 1 and 2 at this time
So 6 or 5 B.C. most likely
The Promises
God promised to Eve that one of her descendents would destroy evil forever
God promised to Abraham that one of his descendents would cause blessings to come on the whole world
God promised to Jacob that this mysterious one would come through his son Judah
God promised to Moses that this coming one would be great prophet like him
God promised to David that…
Promised Messiah
God messiah’d (anointed) David as king
and promised that there would be a future Messiah/Anointed/Christ coming
Same word:
“the Messiah”
“the Christ”
“the anointed” (as king)
Luke 1 & 2
continue
read Scene One: Zechariah in the temple
This is a new creation
In the old creation, the Spirit hovered over the face of the lifeless form of the world
New life was brought forth
Here the Spirit is beginning to bring life again
The Priest is very good at the law, but not so good at faith
This new creation will be brought by faith, not the old external law
read Scene Two: Angel appears to Mary
He will be the promissed Messiah
the anointed King on the throne of David
God created the New Adam
Old Adam was dust, and God breathed his breath into him
made his son, in his image
Jesus, the New Adam is born of the Spirit
“he will be called the Son of God”
and Mary has faith
The new Adam has to face temptation (ch 4) but he passes
read Scene Three: Mary goes to live with Elizabeth
The main point of this is the prophetic revelation
“Why me? —I am nothing!”
v.51-53, the Old Creation was about spectacular galaxies of stars
The new is shockingly different
Creation declares God’s Glory
Psalm 19:
“The heavens declare the glory of God,
the sky proclaims his handiwork.”
But Jesus came to give us a much fuller revelation of God
So what does Jesus’ coming reveal about God?
Humility what aspects ??
to become a helpless baby
born from a nobody
Back to Scripture Slide read Scene Four: Birth of John the Baptist
What is v.63, 64 about? —faith bringing life
v.68-75 imagery from being saved out of Egypt at the time of the Exodus
v.78, 79 “the dawn will break upon us from on high, to give light to those who sit in darkness”
creation imagery
read Scene Five: Jesus is born
anticlimax?
Jesus is born in the animal’s quarters because the inn is full, and laid in a feeding trough
What was it like?
Clue: it was not like this:
Christmas Parody
Humble birth
Is the Father like this, or just Jesus?
He has told you, O man, what is good;
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice,
and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God? Mic 6:8
Jesus said to Philip: “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father” John 14:9
read Scene Six: Angels announce birth to Shepherds
Does anyone know the social class of shepherds?
dirty, smelly, not trusted!
I saw a movie about a group of men in Vancouver who make a living collecting empty beer bottles and exchanging them for fresh beer
It would be like all God’s glory was revealed to them!
New Creation
What does this tell us about the New Creation?
A lot of things are reversed from our Old expectations
Scene Seven (won’t read)
a light, for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.”
Matthew 1 & 2
continue
Now we will have a quick look at Matthew:
Overview of Matt 1:18-2:23
Mary becomes pregnant (of the Holy Spirit) and Joseph has a vision
Jesus born in Bethlehem
(approx 1 year later) The convoy of wise men from the East
Found the child in a house with Mary and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh
Didn’t report back to Herod, —angered him
Supernatural warning and escape
Escape to Egypt from murder of all children up to 2yrs
(April, 4 B.C.) Herod dies, the family returns …to Nazareth
Supernaturally warned in a dream
No mention of being born with the animals or of shepherds
More focus on supernatural care and provision
The new creation comes under attack, but the power of the Spirit is constantly providing for our needs
So what is our response?
Paul applies it in Phil 2
Our response: Philippians 2
You should have the same attitude toward one another that Christ Jesus had,
who though he existed in the form of God
did not regard equality with God
as something to be grasped,
Philippians 2
but emptied himself
by taking on the form of a slave,
by looking like other men,
and by sharing in human nature.
He humbled himself,
by becoming obedient to the point of death
— even death on a cross!
As a result God exalted him
and gave him the name that is above every name,
Philippians 2
Therefore, if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort provided by love, any fellowship in the Spirit, any affection or mercy,
complete my joy and be of the same mind, by having the same love, being united in spirit, and having one purpose.
Instead of being motivated by selfish ambition or vanity, each of you should, in humility, be moved to treat one another as more important than yourself.
Each of you should be concerned not only about your own interests, but about the interests of others as well.
