Full sermon notes - Ephesians pt7: You can choose!

(link to my own translation from the Greek text)

  • First where we are up to:
  • Earlier in the series I talked about being “united with Christ”
  • If we fully grasp this then it will have a big impact on us
    • What have we to fear—we are secure
    • Illustration of the large ship that went down

Ephesians

  • Ephesians falls into two halves
    • Part one (chs 1-3) explains the truth, tells us what reality is about
    • Part two (chs 4-6) tells us how we should live by this truth
  • Summarising part 1 is a prayer for us to know
    1. the power of the Spirit in our inner person
    2. the love of Christ which is “beyond knowledge”
    3. the destiny of being the very dwelling place of God

Walk worthy of the calling: to be perfect in love

  1. I therefore encourage you, I, the prisoner of the Lord
to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called
  2. that we might no longer be infants
    15. but rather practising the truth in love
we may grow up into him in all things
          who is the head, Christ
according to the working by measure of each individual part
bringing about the growth of the body
for the building up of itself in love

How does this happen?

B. Which can only happen through (B(unity)) of the body

C. Which comes about by the (O(measure)) of (G(gift)) received by each individual
D. From Christ who (U(came down and died)) and (U(rose)) as the New Creation
D. From Christ who (U(came down and died)) and (U(rose)) as the New Creation
C. The (G(Gift)) that creates unity

B. (B(unity)) of the body

God’s Laws

  • God created Adam and Eve
  • He gave them laws
  • They broke them
  • He created the nation of Israel
  • He gave them the 10 Commandments
  • They broke them
  • Why? —were they not good laws?

Ephesians 4:17–5:2

  • All the references to minds and understanding are in green
    • Does this make sense?
    • Is lack of education the problem?
  • The key idea comes in v.18 —the life of God
    • The mind is in darkness if it is cut off from the light (v.18)
    • Jesus is the source of truth (v.21)
      • and if our mind is cut off from God
      • it is like the branch of a tree that is cut off
  • So how does a darkenend mind result in people breaking God’s laws?
    • They can’t see that they are good for them, that they are true and beautiful
  • So what is the answer?
    • People must have the life of God in them
  • So what is is that we have learned? …

Eph 4:22–24

  1. to put off according to your previous way of life, (B(the old man))
which is being (R(corrupted)) (G(according to deceitful desires))
  2. to be re(B(new))ed in the (B(spirit)) of your minds
  3. and to put on (B(the new man))
(R(created according to God)) in (G(righteousness and true holiness.))
  • Who is “The New Man” that we are to put on?
    • Jesus Christ
  • So who is “The Old Man” ?
    • Adam
  • Notice corruption (decay, death) vs new creation
  • Notice where the the new creation is: spirit of our minds: our inner being, not yet our bodies
  • So if Adam and his descendents were given a law
    • culminating in the 10 commandments
    • moral laws that applied to all mankind, the whole creation
  • What about the new mankind—is it the same for us?
    • Yes and no
    • God’s idea of right and wrong has not changed
    • But here is the difference

Our DNA

  • Adam was created in the image of God, bearing in some ways God’s likeness
  • But he rebelled and defaced that image
  • He was created from dust
  • As the new creation we carry God’s DNA in a living way
  • We are created in the Spirit, not dust
  • This new nature will naturally live like its parent
  • The start and end:

Eph 4:17 – 5:1-2

  1. This then I say, and bear witness in the Lord
that no-longer you should walk in the way the Gentiles walk
in the futility of (G(their minds))
  2. Therefore be imitators of God, (R(as beloved children)).
  3. And walk in love, just as (R(Christ)) loved us
and gave himself up for us, an offering and sacrifice to God for a fragrant aroma.
  • The middle and end:

Eph 4:17 – 5:1-2

  1. to put off according to your previous way of life, (B(the old man))
which is being (R(corrupted)) (G(according to deceitful desires))
  2. to be re(B(new))ed in the (B(spirit)) of your minds
  3. and to put on (B(the new man))
(R(created according to God)) in (G(righteousness and true holiness.))
  4. Therefore be imitators of God, (R(as beloved children)).
  5. And walk in love, just as (R(Christ)) loved us
and gave himself up for us, an offering and sacrifice to God for a fragrant aroma.

Ephesians 4:17–5:2

Darkened understanding or learning Christ

  1. This then I say, and bear witness in the Lord
that no-longer you should walk in the way the Gentiles walk
in the futility of their minds
  2.       darkened in their understanding
alienated from the life of God
because of the ignorance that is in them
because of the hardness of their heart
  3.       who have become callous
                giving themselves over to indecency
for the practice of every kind of impurity in greediness
  4. but you have not so learned Christ
  5.       in as much as you heard
and in him you were taught
even as the truth is in Jesus

Old and New Creation

  1. to put off according to your previous way of life, the old man
which is being corrupted according to deceitful desires
  2. to be renewed in the spirit of your minds
  3. and to put on the new man
created according to God in righteousness and true holiness.

Walking in Love

  1. Therefore having put off falsehood
let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbour,
for we are members one of another.
  2. Be angry and do not sin;
do not let the sun go down on your anger
  3.             Do not give an opportunity to the devil.
  4. Let the stealer steal no longer;
rather let him labour, doing honest work with his own hands
that he may have something to share with anyone in need
  5. Let no corrupting talk leave your mouths,
but only what is good for building up the person who needs it,
that it may give grace to those who hear.
  6. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God,
          in whom you were sealed
                for the day of redemption.
  7. Let all bitterness and rage and anger and shouting and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.
  8.       Become kind to one another, tenderhearted, showing grace to one another,
just as God in Christ showed grace to you

  9. Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.
  10. And walk in love, just as Christ loved us
and gave himself up for us, an offering and sacrifice to God for a fragrant aroma.

You can chose

  • If you have the new life in Christ, you can live like this!
  • Learn Christ!
  • Put on the new man!
  • Your DNA is to show the love of Jesus
  • What if you are not part of the new creation?
    • You need to ask Jesus for this new life
      • You must understand that his new life will take you over completely
      • and transform your DNA
    • It’s a free gife. Jesus talks of it as like “living water” that if you drink it will spring up inside you into eternal life.
